Pet Peeve – Tardiness
School is back in session here in Chicago. All around my neighborhood the children and teens are so excited to finally be done with another boring summer filled with outdoor activities and thrust forth into another year of what they love best: waking up early and learning! If only.
What it really means is tardiness and laziness.
With all the work I had been doing on cruise ships I had forgotten this phenomenon that encapsulates both so well: the ride to school.
I get to wake up early in the morning to Shave and a Haircut via car horn. This means A) some student inside the apartment building is taking their own sweet time to get ready, or perhaps they’ve slept in with parents coming to their room multiple times; and B) the generous person giving them a ride isn’t generous enough to get out of their car and buzz the specific abode of the student or call them on the cellphone that many people have now…but they WILL let the entire block sweetly arise from their slumber to honk honk-honk honk honk….honk honk.
Multiple times.
If you have to wait that long for someone, chances are they made the choice to not care about your time. That means they’re an asshole and could probably use the fresh air as they walk to their destination. Also, if it is a student, I know the schools are no more than 6 blocks away. Walk.
I think, by law, if someone honks to alert their ride, whomever gets to the car first must be driven to where they need to go. Make it so.
Also, shave and a haircut is hands down the best song for honking/knocking. Followed closely by that Saturday Night song spells out Saturday Night.
